“At times, we hide behind trees to jump at unsuspecting law breakers. It is deterrent and it works because in Chandigarh a motorist never knows which tree hides the giver of a traffic challan.”

The city beautiful witnessed 98 road accident deaths during 2018, which is the lowest toll in past 22 years. The data has been presented by the Road Safety cell of Traffic Police of Chandigarh, after they did road crash analysis for the year 2018. Chandigarh is considered to be one of the planned cities of the country, the data proves no less.
The road accidents had seen a significant hike in the year 2017. This had borne tension among the residents and this is when the traffic police service department came up with safety norms and regulations which were to be followed by the residents. Mrs. Sumitra, a local resident, quotes,” What can be more satisfactory than to listen that my son will come home safe after work. Not only for me, it’s relieving news for every resident of this city.”
The data clearly depicts the success of traffic policemen in the city. One of the traffic policemen said,” This has been possible because of collective efforts of the authorities and the residents. Had the residents disobeyed the rules, the city would have never reached up till here. To keep a tab on what is happening we have put up check posts near nightclubs, hotels and all major roads. CCTV cameras are the norm nowadays for security reasons but they also help monitor traffic. Surprise checks with an alcometer and police-driver interaction at traffic signals late night helps nab the drunken ones.

It’s potent to say that the citizens’ contribution is the only thing that can make the efforts of the government work in a right manner.
